GREEN Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe
The modern coffee plant traces its roots back to the region of southwest Ethiopia, where the legend of Kaldi is deeply intertwined with its history. According to the tale, Kaldi, a shepherd, noticed his goats becoming remarkably energized after eating the fruit from a nearby bush. Intrigued, he tasted the fruit himself, noting its bitter taste and sizable seeds. Much to his surprise, he too experienced a surge of energy from these beans and word quickly spread of their remarkable qualities.
This encounter in southwest Ethiopia is believed to have played a pivotal role in the transformation of coffee from its wild origins into the beverage we know today. Within the southwest lies Yirgacheffe, a renowned coffee-growing region where we source these Ethiopian beans from. The region’s proud majestic heritage as the birthplace of coffee is well represented in the rich flavour of the beans it continues to produce.
