Taiwan, Yangui Estate Coffee
The Yangui Coffee Estate is located in the Alishan region of Chiayi County, an area celebrated for its exceptional tea production. While most famous for its tea, Alishan has steadily gained attention for its unique and high-quality coffee, particularly its fantastic Geisha production. The region’s high altitude and micro-climate are ideal for growing Geisha coffee, which contribute to the bean’s tea-like qualities and quintessential floral and fruity notes, sometimes compared to Assam or Jasmine tea.
Owned by Mr Voyu Poitsonu, a member of Alishan county’s indigenous Tsou tribe, the Yangui Coffee Farm continues to cultivate many fine teas alongside its expanding coffee production. Utilising a complex multi-tier drying system, the estate’s commitment to excellence and quality is quickly making it a standout in Taiwan’s growing speciality coffee scene, which contributed to their success in Taiwan’s 2024 Cup of Excellence.
This outstanding natural processed Geisha placed 5th in Taiwan’s 2024 Cup of Excellence awards, a shining example of the quality geisha coffee that Taiwan is becoming known for. Now a family-run farm, Mr Poitsonu’s son currently oversees all coffee cultivation and processing at Yangui Estate, where he has built and patented his own multi-tier mechanical drier to combat any unreliable weather conditions in the region.Â
The farm’s innovative spirit and small-scale, yet outstanding production results in remarkable coffees that are quickly gaining attention in the coffee world, recently winning prizes in four of the five categories in the Alishan Coffee Evaluation and Assessment. Despite this being the most competitive producing region in Taiwan, Yangui Coffee Farm stands out as one of the best.
